Role description

As a Pharmacist Manager, you will be responsible for leading and coaching the team within your pharmacy to ensure they achieve excellence, provide exceptional customer care and patient safety. You will oversee all aspects of pharmacy operations, to deliver outstanding customer service, profitably.

Managing people is a key aspect of the role which includes recruitment and supporting the onboarding process for new hires, training and mentoring your team to ensure patients and customers needs are met efficiently and cost-effectively.

Core Responsibilities: There may on occasion be a requirement to carry out other tasks, dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels.

Role responsibilities

  • Oversee daily store operations and staff.
  • Lead and develop the team for high performance.
  • Manage medicine procurement with a commercial mindset.
  • Ensure accurate prescriptions for customers.
  • Collaborate to achieve business goals.
  • Build customer and health professional relationships.
  • Achieve store financial targets.
  • Administer immunizations and grow service income.
  • Maintain regulatory standards and records.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and training.
  • Manage staff schedules and cover as needed.
  • Maintain margins in dispensary and retail.
  • Resolve customer queries effectively.
  • Optimize stock levels and practices.

 Leadership

  • Lead by example and set teamwork standards.
  • Ensure safe, profitable pharmacy operations.
  • Provide leadership, training, and support to the team.
  • Collaborate with management for reviews and appraisals.
  • Develop a work plan aligned with strategic goals.
  • Promote equality and diversity, recognizing rights and needs.
  • Stay updated on best practices and propose improvements.
  • Build strong relationships with external entities.
  • Report incidents promptly to the Superintendent Pharmacist.
  • Maintain a safe working environment.
  • Ensure GPhC standards are met.
  • Maximize service engagement and team effectiveness.

Financial Management

  • Deliver a safe, efficient, patient-focused, and profitable service.
  • Manage stock effectively (purchase, price, store).
  • Stay updated on Drug Tariff and shortages for better stock management.
  • Maximize productivity and oversee dispensary.
  • Handle missing stock claims efficiently.
  • Oversee shop, ordering, and pricing, supporting OTC manager.
  • Focus on income generation from services.
  • Handle financial and management tasks.
  • Submit monthly service claims.
  • Reduce stock wastage through processes.
  • Optimize time management and delegation.
  • Ensure quality payment target compliance.
  • Implement seasonal shop promotions.
  • Maximize service income through easy patient access.

 Policies & Procedures

  • Review, improve, and implement policies and procedures to minimize errors and prioritize patient safety.
  • Ensure dispensary practices align with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and current clinical guidelines, maintaining safety.
  • Utilize available tools and seek new ones for safe and effective service delivery optimization.
  • Provide appropriate training and supervision for shop staff.
  • Maintain necessary records accurately.

Team Management

  • Oversee the induction and MCA training of new staff within the shop, and dispensary teams.
  • Promote teamwork, co-operation and harmony within the dispensary team, the pharmacy, and the whole business.

Communication Skills

  • Provide a consistently friendly, efficient, professional, and patient-oriented service.
  • Establish effective communication methods to keep the team and the entire business informed of key pharmacy-related issues.
  • Create timely and effective communications for patients regarding pharmacy services and changes.
  • Foster strong working relationships within the business and with other community health providers.
  • Collaborate with teams from other pharmacies and healthcare backgrounds to deliver effective health services for patients.

Quality & Safety Element

  • Monitor and improve dispensing performance.
  • Resolve patient complaints with the Superintendent Pharmacist.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance and accurate record-keeping.
  • Act on drug alerts promptly.
  • Stay updated on best practices and share knowledge.
  • Report safeguarding concerns.
  • Maintain Health & Safety and Infection Control standards.
  • Lead dispensary audits and meet quality targets.
  • Manage uncollected medication and returns.
  • Maintain dispensary hygiene and equipment. 

Operations

  • Increase business profits through effective operations and income-generating services.
  • Collaborate with management to improve financials.
  • Maintain objectivity and align business and customer needs.
  • Advertise, interview, and hire new team members.
  • Prioritize tasks, communicate, and delegate to the team.
  • Plan and forecast workload for effective service delivery.
  • Maximize team engagement in various services:
    • New Medicine Service (NMS) implementation and training.
    • Minor Ailment Scheme led by suitably trained support staff.
    • Flu Vaccine promotion, bookings, staff training, and external clinics.

Performance Indicators

  • Manage drug procurement effectively, making informed buying decisions.
  • Conduct biannual staff reviews, providing insights and recommendations to management.
  • Ensure pharmacy fulfills all contractual obligations for quality payments.
  • Maintain a well-stocked, organized shop and dispensary.
  • Regularly balance controlled drugs (CD) and maintain accuracy.
